Dermatological testing of cosmetics (compatibility testing, patch test)
The scope of the test is to evaluate the irritation potential on the skin, under the control of a dermatologist. The patch test is applicable for:
• Cosmetic ingredients
• Mixtures of ingredients
• Finished cosmetic products
The patch test is recommended by SCCNFP/0068/98 as a significant tool for the safety assessor. "It is recommended to undertake compatibility testing on a number of human volunteers before the product is finally marketed".
The principle of the patch test is the application of the test product on the skin of the back of adults volunteers. The product is kept in contact with the skin for 48hrs under occlusive patch. The clinical observation of the effects is carried out by a dermatologist after withdrawal of the patch. The ranking of the irritant potential is assessed according to a determined numerical scale depending on the irritation observed; ranking varies between: Not irritant, Very Slightly Irritant, Slightly Irritant, Moderately Irritant, Irritant and Very Irritant.
Human Repeated Insult Patch Test test (HRIPT)
Principle of the HRIPT test (Human Repeated Insult Patch Test). The study is intended to confirm the skin compatibility and the absence of allergenic potential of cosmetic products after repeated application to the skin under exaggerated experimental conditions. The products are applied under patch for a defined time. The applications are repeated 9 times over a period of 3 consecutive weeks, period necessary for the possible induction of an allergy. After a minimal 2-weeks rest period, with no treatment, a single application of the products under patch, to the induction site and to a virgin site and for a defined time, enabled to reveal a possible induced allergy. The number of volunteers is 50 persons, aged 18 -70 years old, male / female.
