Microbial Monitoring - Pathogen Detection

In QACS Molecular biology lab, it is possible to identify microorganisms at the species level using DNA technology. The DNA identification method is globally recognized as the most reliable for the classification of microorganisms. In addition to the micro-organism species name, information about the ecology, classification, growth conditions and possible pathogenesis is provided.

Increasing legislative demands and regulatory bodies, challenge microbial free production procedures. Sometimes, the use of antibacterial, bacteriostatic or bactericidal preservatives are not enough. The quality system must ensure the absence of microbial contamination from production areas and subsequently from finished products. To do so, a constant monitoring system should be established and corrective actions should be taken for continuous improvement. We undertake the Environmental monitoring by swabs, air monitoring, microbiological analysis of raw material or water by our specialized personnel.

Microbes isolated from finished productsingredientswater samples and production areas are candidates for identification. Particularly if their numbers exceed alert or action limits. The name of the species of the microorganism could play a significant role in the investigation of its source and in the root cause analysis. We offer scientific guidance and solutions to further facilitate the microorganism’s investigation and proceed to root cause analysis of any microbial contamination.

  • Bactericidal Identification is achieved in 7 hours beginning with a single colony.
  • Yeast Identification is achieved in 8 hours starting from a single colony. The sequence is multiplied via PCR and its identified using Sanger Sequencing. The resulting sequence is compared to a database in order to assign a species name. Along with the species name, in the analysis report, a description of the microorganism is included to facilitate targeted corrective actions in the analysis report.
  • Mold identification using classical microbiological methods takes weeks. With  molecular testing, identification is achieved in 8 hours starting from a single colony. The resulting sequence is compared to a validated sequence database and the species name is assigned. Furthermore, along with the species name, a description of the microorganism is included in the analysis report to facilitate targeted corrective actions.

Laboratory testing

Animal Species detection (Real Time PCR), Real Time PCR analysis for the sensitive detection of Pork DNA (HALAL), meat DNA (vegan), Sheep, Goat, Bovine, Horse, Chicken, Turkey and other animal species in food is provided.

Botanical, fish or animal authenticity can be detected via DNA Barcoding. The product or raw material acquires a “seal of authenticity” to protect producers & distributors from counterfeiting and increases product value. The TAT is 10-15 working days.

Organisms profile (NGS analysis), in biological mixtures such as cosmetic herbal mixtures or food composed of many ingredients such as sausage, cheese or pie, Next Generation sequencing (NGS) is used to identify any organism that is contained at the species level qualitatively and quantitatively. Methodology

The DNA identification method is globally recognized as the most reliable for the classification of microorganisms. DNA identification techniques present a clear reliability advantage over other methods such as APIs that are metabolic, MALTI TOF or other immunochemical methods.

DNA fragments reveal information about the microorganism’s species (bacteria/yeast/fungi). PCR is used and analyzed in a Genetic Analyzer. The sequence is then compared with gene databases. The micro-organism species name, information on the ecology, classification, growth conditions and possible pathogenesis are provided. We can provide scientific instructions and solutions to resolve the causes of microbial contamination, through investigation of the microbiological origin and analysis of the deeper causes upon request.

The technique includes DNA isolation and detection of specific genetic elements indicating genetic modification via Real Time PCR. If detected, a quantification analysis follows to quantify the extend of genetic modification.
